I love springtime. I love the sounds of nature waking up and the smells of melted snow, thick, damp soil, and just-sprouting grass.
I also love trimming my bushes and trees in the springtime. It takes some knowledge of the plants I’m working on to know just how much to trim them back. Some trees and bushes require severe pruning, while others need subtle, light shaping.
God knows us much better than I know my trees and bushes. He is the best gardener history has ever known. In fact, Jesus spoke of this fact in John Chapter 15 when he called himself “the vine,” called us, his fololwers, “the branches,” and called his Father the Master Gardener. In this story, Jesus described God as the one who knows exactly how far back to prune each branch, with the goal being an abundant harvest.
I want you to think for a minute about your “branch.” What kind of shape is it in? Are you being fruitful as a branch, or have you grown dry and withered? The good news is that God knows you. He knows just what kind of care you need – even when that “care” doesn’t feel that great (who likes to be cut into pieces?). In the end, our Master Gardener wants one thing for each of us: he wants us to bear abundant fruit. Make it your aim to allow Him to prune what needs to be pruned.
